Awake fibreoptic intubation for airway burns.
A young adult was admitted to a casualty department with severe burns sustained in a motor vehicle fire. His airway was initially patient, but in grave danger of obstruction due to inhalational injury. Conventional methods of airway management were unable to guarantee a patent airway and a novel approach is described.

Three cases of trismus caused by oropharyngeal sepsis are described where fibreoptic-assisted awake intubation using an oral airway intubator and nebulised lidocaine was safely and successfully achieved.
متن کاملLaryngeal Radiation Fibrosis: A Case of Failed Awake Flexible Fibreoptic Intubation
Awake fibreoptic intubation is accepted as the gold standard for intubation of patients with an anticipated difficult airway. Radiation fibrosis may cause difficulties during the intubation procedure. We present an unusual severe case of radiation induced changes to the larynx, with limited clinical symptoms, that caused failure of the fibreoptic intubation technique. A review of the known lite...
متن کاملEfficacy of atomised local anaesthetic versus transtracheal topical anaesthesia for awake fibreoptic intubation
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Successful awake fibreoptic intubation (AFOI) depends on adequate topical anaesthesia of the airway. We aimed to compare efficacy of atomised local anaesthetic versus transtracheal topical anaesthesia for AFOI. METHODS It was a prospective, randomised controlled study of 33 patients with the American Society of Anesthesiologists' physical status 1-3 with anticipated diffic...
متن کاملComplications of awake fibreoptic intubation without sedation in 200 healthy anaesthetists attending a training course.
BACKGROUND Two hundred anaesthetists underwent airway endoscopy and attempted awake fibreoptic intubation (FOI) on a training course. Complications were recorded and each subject's response to the procedure was assessed. METHODS Topical airway local anaesthesia was produced with up to 9 mg kg(-1) of lidocaine, sedation was not used. Complications during and after the procedure were noted. Lat...
